Hunter-Greene Summer Classic/NYS Road Race Championships

Saturday, June 28, 2014
Tannersville, NY

Such a beautiful, sunny day!  We were up at the starting line at the Stone Church at 8am to watch my 9-year-old, Corby, start his race (silver medal for NYS!).
I had a little time to go back to town for a cup of coffee and then get on my bike to ride back up to the starting line.  There were only about 20 of us in the Cat 4/Masters group and we were starting with the 15-18 year old juniors so I had a feeling it was going to be a fast start (that, and the mile and a half down a 7% grade!).  It was supposed to be a neutral start on the downhill but I don't think the pace car got that memo--so fast!  It was a downhill chase and then it was all I could do to stay with that peloton on the flats and rollers--this is so not my strong suit.  Need a little Conklin Avenue interval training--Maria?;)  I managed to hang on for 8 miles but then I was off the back with 32 miles to go--oh, well...beautiful mountains and creeks to keep me entertained.  It was a 41 mile course that wound around Hunter Mountain and Windham, through terrific Catskill towns.  It was worth the suffer factor just to be out there on such a glorious day.  Very grateful to see the 1K to go sign but that also meant I had to climb back up that hill we started on--not so fast going up the hill as coming down! Happy to finish. Happy to go to lunch at an awesome Mexican restaurant in Tannersville.  So happy to take a shower when I got home!

Corby & August cheering my across the finish line.

Thanks to Anthem Sports and the Drakes for putting on another terrific race.

Wilmington Whiteface weekend recap

Race recap from Placid Planets inaugural race weekend in Wilmington!  By Stephanie Tashjian.
Saturday morning we woke up to a beautiful morning and I couldn't have asked for better race conditions! I raced in a combined field on 3/4 women, masters, and juniors. 10 ladies rode the 30 mile circuit around quiet roads in Wilmington. The group stayed together the first lap and during the second a few of us were dropped. Overall the course was a great loop with a nice downhill section and some light climbing.
Today we road again in the Wilmington Whiteface Road Race which had some really great climbing. We really lucked out with the weather this weekend with the sun out and no crazy winds.
The pack stayed together on the stretch out to the main loop of the course but I was able to work together with a few ladies along the way to the finish. The course itself was unbelievable with some amazing views. The climb just outside the turn back to town for the finish was pretty tough but once I made it past that there was a nice six mile decent with a few rollers that was welcomed before the final climb to Santa's workshop. Honestly I thought the final climb was going to be pretty horrible but there were a few breaks in the climb to break it up a bit. 1.6 miles up the road to the top of Whiteface I crossed the finish line. The decent back into town was definitely worth the climb up!
I have to give props to team Placid Plant on a organized and well run race. The volunteers on the course were amazing wether you were in first and last and did a great job keeping racers safe. I'll definitely be back again next year!
(P.S. I owe a very special thanks to Marsha for letting me tag along this weekend while she officiated! Thanks Marsha!)
